Overview

Drive south to Tiznit — a compact walled town renowned across Morocco for its Berber silver jewellery — then continue to the wild fishing beach of Aglou Plage, where troglodyte fishermen's huts cut into the coastal cliffs have been used for generations.

Tiznit lies about 90 km south of Agadir at the start of the road toward the Sahara. Its 19th-century pisé walls enclose a small, manageable medina built in a single generation under Sultan Hassan I in 1882. The town is famous for one thing above all others: silver. The jeweller's souk is one of the best in southern Morocco and concentrates Berber silversmiths who work in fibule brooches, Amazigh pendant necklaces, heavy anklets and the chunky geometric bracelets characteristic of Anti-Atlas Berber culture. Many pieces are made on site; watching a silversmith work is part of the visit.

From Tiznit the road curves west to Aglou Plage, an undeveloped Atlantic beach backed by low red cliffs. Cut into the cliff face are a series of small cave-like shelters — troglodyte rooms used by local fishermen for storing gear and sleeping during the sardine season — a practice that continues today and gives Aglou a character entirely unlike the developed beaches of Agadir. Lunch is a simple grilled-fish meal at one of two small beachfront restaurants before the return drive north.

Day-by-day itinerary

Agadir → Agadir

  1. 1

    08:00 · Depart Agadir South

    Agadir → Tiznit

Drive south on the N1 past the beach town of Aourir and the argan forest, reaching the flat Chtouka plain before arriving at Tiznit in approximately 90 minutes.

  2. 2

    09:30 · Tiznit Medina & Ramparts

    Tiznit Medina

Enter through one of the main gates and walk the medina's main artery, lined with jewellery workshops. Your guide explains the town's unusual single-generation founding history and the role of the silversmiths who originally dominated the trade.

  3. 3

    10:00 · Silver Souk

    Tiznit Silver Souk

The jeweller's souk runs along several interconnected lanes. Silversmiths work in small open-fronted ateliers. Your guide helps distinguish old pieces from new and, if you want to buy, helps negotiate fairly. Fibule brooches, Amazigh pendants and heavy cuff bracelets are the signature pieces.

  4. 4

    11:00 · Source Bleue & Grande Mosquée

    Tiznit

Walk to the Source Bleue — the spring that determined the town's founding location — now a small garden with a pool beneath old trees. The minaret of the Grande Mosquée visible from here is notable for its wooden perch finials.

  5. 5

    12:00 · Aglou Plage & Cliff Shelters

    Aglou Plage

Drive west to Aglou. Walk the beach toward the cliffs where the troglodyte fishermen's shelters are cut into the rock — some have rough doors and small windows, and fishing nets hang outside those in current use. The beach is wide, the waves powerful; swimming is good when swell is moderate.

  6. 6

    13:00 · Grilled Fish Lunch

    Aglou Plage Beachfront

Lunch at one of the small beachfront restaurants — typically fresh sardines or sea bass grilled over charcoal, served with bread, harissa and salads. Simple, honest and very good.

  7. 7

    14:30 · Return to Agadir

    Agadir

Drive north on the N1, arriving back in Agadir by approximately 16:30.
