Overview

Drive deep into the Anti-Atlas to Tafraoute, a pink-granite valley town ringed by Berber villages, palmeraies and the extraordinary Painted Rocks — boulders spray-painted in vivid colours by Belgian artist Jean Vérame in 1984.

The drive from Agadir to Tafraoute crosses the lower Anti-Atlas via Aït Baha, climbing through a landscape of argan and thuya scrub before the road suddenly opens onto the pale-rose granite amphitheatre that cups Tafraoute at around 1,200 m. The town is the commercial heart of the Ameln Valley, whose escarpment is dotted with Berber villages — Oumesnat, Aït Mansour, Tazka — each clinging to the cliff above terraced almond groves and palmeraies.

Day two is spent exploring the valley on foot or by short drives: the Ameln canyon, the palmeraie circuit and, most memorably, the Painted Rocks — a field of house-sized boulders that Vérame covered in blue, red and purple paint in a now-famous land-art intervention. The colours have faded and bleached over four decades, giving the rocks an otherworldly patina that fits perfectly into the landscape. Almond blossom in February transforms the valley pink-white and draws Moroccan visitors as well as foreign photographers.

  1. 1

Day 1 · Agadir to Tafraoute via Aït Baha

Agadir → Aït Baha → Tafraoute

Leave Agadir at 08:00 heading southeast. Pause in Aït Baha (around 90 minutes from Agadir) — a small market town in a saffron-coloured valley — for coffee and a roadside argan stall. The final stretch switchbacks up into the Anti-Atlas proper, with the pink granite becoming more dramatic with every kilometre. Arrive Tafraoute around midday.

Yes. Every itinerary is a starting point. Add a day, swap a riad, change the start city — we'll re-quote in 24 hours and lock the price in writing before any deposit.

Easy. Light walking on medina cobblestones, plus optional activities you can opt in or out of on the day.
