Why Essaouira

Essaouira (Mogador on the old charts) is the coastal partner we pair most naturally with Agadir — about two and a half hours north along the Atlantic, threading the argan forests, which makes it the simplest add-on to a Souss beach holiday. Its 18th-century Skala ramparts stood in for a city in Game of Thrones; its blue-and-white medina is compact, easy to walk and far calmer than the inland imperial cities; and its famously gusty beach pulls kite- and windsurfers all year. Set Agadir's broad, sun-soaked resort bay against Essaouira's salt-bleached, breezy, faintly bohemian streets and you get the full range of Morocco's southern Atlantic in one short drive.

What to see

Highlights of Essaouira.

01

The Skala ramparts

Portuguese cannon walls lined up against the Atlantic spray, cast as the city of Astapor in Game of Thrones — exactly the sea-fortress drama that Agadir's modern bay can't offer.

02

The fishing port & seafood grills

Point at a fish straight off the morning boats and have it grilled while you wait at the port stalls — about as fresh as seafood gets anywhere on this coast.

03

Argan cooperatives

Women's co-ops along the road between Agadir and Essaouira hand-press argan oil from the roasted kernels — an easy, worthwhile pause on the drive north.

04

Sidi Kaouki & the coast south

Long, empty surf beaches unspool south toward Taghazout and home to Agadir; head the other way and the oyster lagoon of Oualidia waits up the coast.

Before you go

Practical notes.

  • Getting there: Roughly 2h30 up the coast from Agadir, or 3h from Marrakech; the small ESU airport takes some direct flights
  • Weather: Reliably breezy — pack a light jacket even in summer, more than you'd ever need on the sheltered Agadir bay
  • Festival: Gnaoua World Music Festival, late June

FAQ

Essaouira — common questions.

Is Essaouira easy to combine with Agadir?+

It's the obvious pairing — about two and a half hours north along the Atlantic with argan country strung along the way. Stay over rather than dashing up and back; give it two nights and you settle into the slow rhythm of the medina.

Is Essaouira or Agadir better for swimming?+

Agadir, and not by a small margin. Essaouira is windy and the open Atlantic stays cool, which is exactly why surfers love it and swimmers less so. Agadir's sheltered crescent bay is calmer and warmer for actually getting in the water.
