Agadir's festivals — a month-by-month calendar

From the Timitar Amazigh music festival on the seafront to the almond blossom of Tafraoute and the surf events up the coast — the key events that shape the region's calendar and how to plan around them.

The Agadir region's festival calendar is shaped by three forces: the Islamic lunar calendar (Ramadan and the two Eids shift by roughly eleven days each year), the seasons that make spring and autumn the prime travel windows, and a lively summer music scene centred on the Timitar festival. Timing a visit around a major event can turn a good beach trip into a remarkable one.

January – March: almond blossom and quiet sun

The first quarter is mild, sunny and quiet on the coast — ideal winter-sun weather and unhurried private tours without crowds. Inland, February brings the highlight: the Tafraoute Almond Blossom Festival in the Anti-Atlas, when the pink-blossomed valleys fill with music, markets and Berber celebration. When Ramadan falls in this window, Agadir's evenings turn warm and communal after iftar. Book accommodation ahead during Ramadan and the Eids, when domestic travel peaks.

April – May: spring, surf and the moussems

Spring is one of the best times to visit: warm sea, green hills inland, comfortable air and reliable surf. It is a fine season for Paradise Valley and the Anti-Atlas before the summer heat. Across the Souss, the season of moussems — local saint's-day gatherings with music, markets and sometimes fantasia horsemanship — gets under way; they are rarely advertised internationally but warmly received.

Ask your guide about any moussem or harvest gathering near your route. The surf is still good into May, and the beaches are pleasantly uncrowded before the European summer holidays.

June: early summer on the coast

June brings warm, sunny days to the coast, tempered by the reliable Atlantic sea breeze, while the Souss plain and the Anti-Atlas heat up — so inland sightseeing shifts to early mornings. It is the run-up to festival season, and a fine month for the beach, the marina and gentle surf before the July crowds. See our Agadir destination guide.

July – August: the Timitar Festival

High summer brings the region's flagship event: the Timitar Festival, usually held over several days in July. It celebrates Amazigh (Berber) music and culture alongside international world-music acts, with mostly free open-air concerts on the Agadir seafront drawing huge, joyful crowds. It is the cultural high point of the year on the coast. See our Agadir destination guide.

For the rest of the summer, the strategy is sea and shade: Agadir's beach and the surf coast stay comfortable thanks to the ocean breeze, while the interior is best saved for the cooler hours. Book accommodation early — July and August are the busiest months on the bay.

September – November: the prime travel season

Autumn settles into the most comfortable range of the year — warm sea, gentle air, clear light and the return of the bigger surf swells. This is peak season for the beach, the day trips and the full Souss-and-Anti-Atlas loop, and the surf camps fill up, so plan ahead. The light on the Anti-Atlas and at Souss-Massa is at its finest. December: winter sun and quiet beaches

December brings the heart of the winter-sun season — mild, bright days, quiet beaches and far fewer crowds, even as much of Europe turns cold. The sea is cool for swimming but the terraces, the souk and the day trips are at their most pleasant, and the big surf is rolling in. It is a calm, rewarding time to travel, and accommodation is often at its best value outside the holiday peaks.

Frequently asked

What is the biggest cultural festival in Agadir?

The Timitar Festival is Agadir's flagship event, usually held over several days in July. It celebrates Amazigh (Berber) music and culture alongside international world-music acts, with free open-air concerts on the seafront and in the city — one of the largest music festivals in Morocco, with a strong local soul and huge crowds.

When is the Timitar Festival?

Timitar typically takes place in July, though exact dates vary by year. Concerts run in the evenings on the main seafront stage and at venues around the city, mostly free to attend. Book accommodation well ahead, as Agadir fills during the festival.

Can I attend Agadir-area festivals as a tourist?

Yes — most are open to all visitors and many are free. Timitar actively welcomes international audiences, and the regional moussems (saint's-day gatherings) and the Tafraoute almond-blossom festival are tourist-friendly. Some local religious gatherings are more community-focused but rarely closed to respectful visitors.

How does Ramadan affect travel in Agadir?

Ramadan creates a different but rewarding atmosphere. The city is quieter by day and festive after iftar (the sunset meal), with cafés and the souk coming alive at night. Most resorts, beach restaurants and tourist sites stay open, though some local eateries close until dusk and hours shift. Be respectful by not eating or drinking openly in public during daylight.

Are there religious festivals worth planning around near Agadir?

Morocco marks the two Eids (Eid al-Fitr after Ramadan and Eid al-Adha), when families gather and the mood is festive but many businesses close for a few days. The Souss region also holds traditional moussems — local pilgrimages and festivals honouring a saint, with music, markets and sometimes fantasia horsemanship — worth catching if your dates align.

What about the almond blossom and surf events?

The Tafraoute Almond Blossom Festival in the Anti-Atlas, usually in February, celebrates the harvest amid the pink-blossomed valleys with music and markets — a beautiful time to visit the mountains. On the coast, surf competitions and events appear at Taghazout and along the bay through the autumn-to-spring swell season; check current listings as dates change year to year.
