Why Atlas Mountains

Look inland from the Agadir coast and the High Atlas is that long, snow-topped rampart on the horizon — the barrier that shields the Souss plain from the interior. Its most-walked corner rises behind Marrakech, where an hour's drive lands you at Imlil (1,740 m) among Berber villages, walnut and cherry orchards, and the start of the trail up Jbel Toubkal, at 4,167 m the highest peak in North Africa. Coastal guests usually approach via Marrakech, or take the dramatic Tizi n'Test road that climbs straight over the range from the Souss valley near Taroudant. The mountains flex to whatever you want: a day walk, a weekend in a lodge, or a 2–3 day trek with guides and mules.

What to see

Highlights of Atlas Mountains.

01

Imlil & the Toubkal valley

The trekkers' launch village — lunch on the terrace at Kasbah du Toubkal, then an easy walk to Aroumd or up the valley to the Sidi Chamharouch shrine.

02

Summit Jbel Toubkal

A two-day, mule-supported climb to 4,167 m — a steep walk rather than a technical climb in summer, but ice axe and crampons once the snow sets in.

03

Ourika valley & Setti Fatma

The gentler option, closer to Marrakech: a tagine with your feet by the river, the Monday Berber market, and the scramble up to the seven waterfalls.

04

Asni & Ouirgane

Lower-lying villages dotted with boutique mountain lodges — the soft-landing Atlas for guests who'd rather not lace up for a summit.

FAQ

Atlas Mountains — common questions.

Can you climb Toubkal without a guide?+

No — a licensed guide has been required since 2018. We work with a small, trusted panel of certified local mountain guides we've known for years, not a faceless agency roster.

Can I reach the High Atlas from the Agadir side?+

Yes. Beyond the standard Marrakech approach, the Tizi n'Test road hauls over the range from the Souss valley near Taroudant — a spectacular crossing that links our coast straight to the heart of the High Atlas without doubling back through Marrakech.
