Why Agafay Desert

When there's no room in the trip for the real Sahara, the Agafay is Marrakech's pocket-sized stand-in: a rolling, rock-strewn moonscape just 40 minutes from the city, the snow-capped High Atlas filling the horizon behind it. It's a stone desert of khaki ridges rather than sand dunes, but come sunset — a lantern-lit camp, a camel in silhouette, the Atlas flushing pink — it conjures most of the romance for a fraction of the driving. For coastal guests it slots neatly onto an inland break in Marrakech: a quick hit of desert with none of the multi-day southern loop.

Practical notes.

  • Getting there: Roughly 40 minutes by road south-west of Marrakech
  • Note: Agafay is a stone, not sand, desert — for proper dunes you'll want Merzouga or Chigaga

FAQ

Agafay Desert — common questions.

Is the Agafay desert worth it?+

If you can't free up the days for the real Sahara, absolutely. The Agafay hands you a desert sunset, camps and camel rides just 40 minutes from Marrakech — ideal alongside an inland break from the coast — as long as you go knowing it's rocky hills rather than sand dunes.

Is Agafay a real desert with sand dunes?+

No — Agafay is a stone desert of rolling rocky hills, not Saharan sand. It's beautiful at sunset and wonderfully convenient, but for the classic dunes you'll need Erg Chebbi (Merzouga) or Erg Chigaga, deep in the south.
