Overview

Drive east across the Souss Valley to Taroudant — the 'little Marrakech' of the south — with its largely intact 16th-century red-ochre ramparts, two busy souks and excellent local tagine, stopping at an argan women's cooperative on the return.

Taroudant sits about 80 km east of Agadir in the broad, intensively cultivated Souss Valley, enclosed by some of the best-preserved city walls in Morocco. The ochre ramparts — originally Saadian, massively reinforced under the Alaouites — stretch for several kilometres around a medina that still functions entirely as a working Moroccan town rather than a tourist set piece. Two souks operate inside the walls: the Arab Souk near Bab Targhount deals in everyday goods, while the Berber Souk concentrates on silver jewellery, antiques, fossils from the Anti-Atlas and traditional leather sandals made locally.

The road between Agadir and Taroudant passes through the Souss Valley argan belt — a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve — and the return journey includes a stop at a women's argan cooperative where members demonstrate the labour-intensive process of cracking argan nuts by hand and stone-grinding the kernels. Cold-pressed culinary argan oil, cosmetic oil and amlou are available to buy at fair, fixed prices.

Day-by-day itinerary

Agadir → Agadir

  1. 1

08:00 · Depart Agadir — Souss Valley Road

    Agadir → Souss Valley

Head east on the N10 through Aït Melloul and across the flat Souss Valley floor, a mosaic of citrus, tomato and banana plantations watered by the Souss River. The Anti-Atlas foothills rise to the south; the Atlas to the north. Journey time to Taroudant is about 80 minutes.

  2. 2

    09:30 · Rampart Walk & Bab Targhount

    Taroudant Medina

Enter through Bab Targhount and walk a section of the inner rampart — the views look over both the medina and the palm groves outside. Your guide explains the Saadian and Alaouite construction phases.

  3. 3

    10:15 · Berber Souk

    Souk Berbère, Taroudant

Navigate the Berber Souk, which specialises in silver jewellery (Souss and Anti-Atlas styles), trilobite and ammonite fossils, antique Berber daggers and locally made leather babouche. Prices are negotiable but your guide will ensure they are honest.

  4. 4

    11:30 · Medina & Arab Souk

    Souk Arabe, Taroudant

A short walk to the Arab Souk for a different atmosphere: fresh produce stalls, spice merchants with local cumin and dried ginger, and fabric sellers. The Place Assarag square marks the medina's social heart.

  5. 5

12:30 · Tagine Lunch in the Medina

    Taroudant

Lunch at a restaurant inside the medina walls — typically a slow-cooked lamb or vegetable tagine with khobz, harira soup and fresh orange juice from Souss Valley oranges.

14:00 · Return via Argan Cooperative

    Souss Valley — Argan Cooperative

On the return west toward Agadir, stop at an argan women's cooperative. Members demonstrate cracking the iron-hard argan nut by hand and the stone quern that grinds roasted kernels into culinary oil. Purchase argan products at posted fixed prices.

  7. 7

    16:00 · Return to Agadir

    Agadir

Arrive back in Agadir by approximately 16:30.

Frequently asked

Questions about this tour.

Is "Taroudant & the Argan Road" private or a group tour?

100% private. Just you and the people you book with — your own driver, vehicle and pace from start to finish. We never pool travellers.

Can I change the dates or itinerary?

Yes. Every itinerary is a starting point. Add a day, swap a riad, change the start city — we'll re-quote in 24 hours and lock the price in writing before any deposit.

How fit do I need to be?

Easy. Light walking on medina cobblestones, plus optional activities you can opt in or out of on the day.

When should I book?

Agadir is a year-round coast, but for peak weeks (Christmas, Easter and July–August) and anything involving Paradise Valley or the Anti-Atlas in spring, book 6–10 weeks ahead. Last-minute (under 14 days) is usually still possible with a phone call.
