Why Skoura

Skoura is a palm oasis and village around 42 km east of Ouarzazate on the kasbah road, in the Drâa-Tafilalet at roughly 1,200 m. Its oasis holds hundreds of thousands of date palms, watered by an old network of khettaras — underground channels — and tucked among the palms stand some of the finest earthen kasbahs on the southern circuit, the Kasbah Amerdil (also written Amerhidil) chief among them: a 17th-century Glaoui fortress that once featured on the 50-dirham banknote. Quieter and far less trodden than Aït Ben Haddou but every bit as rewarding to look at, Skoura works either as a short detour or as the overnight before the Dadès Gorge.

What to see

Highlights of Skoura.

01

Which kasbah in Skoura appears on the Moroccan banknote?

Kasbah Amerdil (Amerhidil), a 17th-century earthen fortress at the heart of the Skoura palmeraie, once appeared on the old 50-dirham note. Part-restored and open to visitors, it sits in an oasis you can explore by bicycle or on a mule.

02

The palmeraie and khettara irrigation network

Skoura's oasis lives off a centuries-old web of khettaras — underground gravity-fed channels — carrying High Atlas snowmelt to the palms. Guided walks through the groves unpack the traditional hydraulic engineering still working today.

03

Kasbahs Dar Ahlam and Ben Moro

Two more restored earthen kasbahs in the oasis — Ben Moro is among the oldest in the region, while Dar Ahlam has become an award-winning boutique property with a superb kitchen.

04

Rose valley approach from Kelaat M'Gouna

Skoura marks the western end of the rose-valley corridor; come in from the east in May and you pass fields of damask roses cut for rosewater, perfume and the distilleries at Kelaat M'Gouna.

Before you go

Practical notes.

  • Getting there: 42 km (45 min) east of Ouarzazate on the N10 kasbah road toward Boumalne Dadès
  • Best combined with: Ouarzazate, Aït Ben Haddou and the Dadès Gorge on a southern loop
  • Date harvest: October is harvest time — the palmeraie is at its busiest and the Medjool dates on the roadside stalls are exceptional

FAQ

Skoura — common questions.

Is Skoura worth stopping at on the road to the Sahara?+

Yes — the Amerdil kasbah and a ride through the palmeraie add a rewarding, very different break between Ouarzazate and the Dadès Gorge. Most guests pass through in 2–3 hours, but an overnight at a kasbah guesthouse pays off for anyone who lingers.

How does Skoura compare to Aït Ben Haddou?+

Aït Ben Haddou is more dramatic and better known, partly thanks to the films. Skoura is quieter, greener for the oasis, and more intimate in scale. Serious kasbah lovers do both; if you're short on time, give Aït Ben Haddou the priority.

Can you cycle through the Skoura palmeraie?+

Yes — the oasis tracks are flat, shaded and made for an unhurried bike ride. Several guesthouses in the palmeraie rent bicycles, and a full circuit of the main kasbahs takes 2–3 hours.
