Why Ouarzazate & Aït Ben Haddou
Ouarzazate holds the dry southern flank of the High Atlas, the town everyone passes through on the way to the Sahara, the Dadès and Drâa valleys and the kasbah road. From the Agadir coast you reach it on the eastern arm of a southern loop — up through Taroudant or over the Tizi n'Tichka from Marrakech — and it makes the natural overnight before the dunes. Forty minutes on, Aït Ben Haddou is the country's most celebrated fortified village: a UNESCO ksar that has stood in for Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia and the Game of Thrones city of Yunkai, with the working Atlas Studios right beside it.
What to see
The UNESCO-listed mudbrick village — climb through the tangle of houses to the old granary at the top for the wide shot back across the riverbed.
Functioning sound stages and standing exterior sets left behind by Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven, Cleopatra and a long roster of others.
A crumbling 19th-century Glaoui palace off the old caravan route — faded painted ceilings and a fraction of the crowds you'll meet at Aït Ben Haddou.
Two days further east: cliff-hugging roads, walnut groves and one of the most dramatic canyon walks anywhere in Morocco.

Without question — it's the most arresting single sight in southern Morocco and a UNESCO World Heritage village. Most visitors give it an hour in the harsh midday glare; we'd steer you to sunrise or sunset, when the earth walls turn molten.
It's the hinge between the Atlas and the desert, usually the second day of a southern loop out of Agadir or Marrakech. Sleep here one night and carry on toward the Sahara the next morning rather than trying to force the whole thing into a single brutal drive.
