Why Tinghir
Tinghir (also written Tinerhir) is a market town and oasis at around 1,342 m in the Drâa-Tafilalet, strung along the northern edge of a wide date-palm oasis fed by the Todra river as it spills down off the High Atlas. It lies roughly 180 km east of Ouarzazate and 33 km west of the Todra Gorge's most dramatic narrows, which makes it the main overnight base for the canyon. But the town earns its keep beyond that role — the terraced palmeries, the Glaoui kasbah up on the hill, the weekly Tuesday souk and the cluster of Berber village quarters are well worth the stay in their own right. Tinghir's palmery is one of the broadest and most fertile in the south, running some 50 km long.
What to see
The Todra Gorge is a slot canyon where the river has sliced through 300-metre limestone walls to a passage as tight as 10 metres at its narrowest. The main narrows lie 33 km north-east of Tinghir, reached on a scenic road through the palm oasis — the drive itself is half the show.
One of the longest, most productive oases in the south — the palmery follows the Todra river for some 50 km, its terraced plots of dates, alfalfa, henna, figs and pomegranates worked by Berber farmers on traditional irrigation channels.
The 19th-century Glaoui fortress on the hill above Tinghir looks down on a cluster of old village quarters — Ait Ouaarda, Ait Bou Oulli and others — of earthen architecture studded with defensive towers and painted doors.
The vertical limestone of the Todra Gorge carries more than 150 bolted sport routes from 5a to 8b, putting it among the top rock-climbing venues in Africa. Several guiding outfits in the gorge hire gear and lead climbers of every level.

Either works, but Tinghir repays an overnight. Walking the palmery at dawn, poking around the old quarters, and reaching the gorge in the early light before the Ouarzazate coaches arrive makes for a far richer day than a two-hour stop.
The main narrows — the section everyone photographs — pinch to about 10 metres at the base, with limestone walls climbing 300 metres on either side. The passage runs around 600 metres along the shallow Todra, and you'll wade the stream a few times.
They're different beasts. The Todra wins on drama at the narrows — sheer walls, an enclosed slot — while the Dadès is wider and longer, with the famous switchback road and the strange 'monkey-finger' rock. Anyone serious about the south does both on the one loop.
