Why Meknes
Of Morocco's four imperial cities, Meknes is the one travellers tend to skip — and the one we'd argue for hardest. It sits in the northern interior near Fes, a long way up-country from the Agadir coast, so it lands on a grand-tour itinerary rather than a coastal week. The 17th-century sultan Moulay Ismail built it to outshine Versailles, leaving monumental gates, the vast Heri es-Souani granaries and stables, and a lived-in, easy-going medina that draws a fraction of the crowds its bigger neighbours pull. It's also the natural base for the Roman ruins of Volubilis and the holy hill town of Moulay Idriss, both half an hour away.
What to see
Often called the finest monumental gate in the country — a sweep of green-and-white zellige and carved stone framing the entrance to the imperial city.
The sultan's cavernous vaulted granaries and stables, set beside a huge reflecting reservoir dug to keep a besieged city in water.
A UNESCO site of mosaics, standing arches and olive groves — the best-preserved Roman ruins in Morocco, just half an hour from the gates.
A sacred whitewashed town spilling over two hillsides, holding the tomb of the man who founded Morocco's first ruling dynasty.
