Why Ifrane

Ifrane is about as far from the Agadir beach as a Moroccan town gets in spirit: a planned settlement at 1,665 m in the Middle Atlas, laid out by the French protectorate in 1929 as a hill-station retreat and built to look like a Swiss Alpine village. Red-roofed chalets, trimmed parks and stone fountains make it the most architecturally surprising town in the country. It sits inside the Ifrane National Park, whose old-growth cedar forests are among the largest left in North Africa and shelter one of the world's most southerly wild populations of Barbary macaques. The nearby Michlifen ski resort, at 2,000 m, gets dependable snow from December to February, which makes Ifrane Morocco's main winter-sports base — swap the surfboard for skis.

What to see

Highlights of Ifrane.

01

Cedar forests and Barbary macaques

The forests around Azrou, 17 km south of Ifrane, hold the largest easily reached population of Barbary macaques in Morocco — semi-habituated troops cross the cedars at road level and can be watched from the verge. Please don't feed them.

02

Ifrane National Park walks

Waymarked trails through cedar, holm-oak and juniper, with the lakes at Dayet Aoua and Dayet Afourher pulling in migratory waterbirds each spring. The park runs to 125,000 hectares and ranks among the best birdwatching spots in the country.

03

Michlifen ski resort

Morocco's main ski area, 12 km from Ifrane at 2,000 m — a compact resort with four runs and a chairlift, open December–February. It draws Moroccan families and anyone after an unexpected winter itinerary.

04

The stone lion and ville verte

Ifrane's colonial-era set piece is a carved stone lion in the central park, long credited to a German prisoner of war. The town's clean, green streets and alpine roofs are a startling, fascinating contrast to anywhere else in Morocco.

Before you go

Practical notes.

  • Getting there: About 1h (65 km) south of Fes on the N8; also reached from Meknes (60 km) and Azrou (17 km)
  • Ski season: Michlifen runs December–February, but snow isn't guaranteed every year — check conditions before you plan a trip around skiing
  • Wildlife etiquette: Don't feed the Barbary macaques — human food throws off their foraging and breeds dependency; watch from a little way back
  • Altitude: Ifrane sits at 1,665 m, so evenings stay cool even in summer — carry a warm layer year-round

FAQ

Ifrane — common questions.

Why is Ifrane called 'Little Switzerland'?+

The French colonial administration built Ifrane in 1929 as a summer retreat and styled it on purpose after the Swiss and French Alps — chalets, steep tiled roofs, trimmed parks and stone fountains. The cedar forests and the winter snow only sharpen the resemblance.

Where can I see Barbary macaques near Ifrane?+

Your best bet is the cedar forest around Azrou, 17 km south of Ifrane on the N13. Troops are often out at road level, especially in the morning, and 30–60 minutes is usually all it takes to see them.

Is Ifrane worth visiting in summer?+

Yes — the cedar forests stay cool and green, the national-park lakes are lovely for walks and birdwatching, and the altitude keeps Ifrane 10–15°C cooler than Fes or Marrakech. It's an excellent one-night stop on a Fes–Marrakech overland run.

Can you ski in Morocco?+

You can — Michlifen near Ifrane and Oukaimeden in the High Atlas above Marrakech are the country's two main ski areas. Michlifen is the easier reach from Fes, Oukaimeden from Marrakech. Both are small by European standards but make for a genuinely offbeat trip.
