The best of Tafraoute

01Culture

The Painted Rocks (Les Pierres Bleues)

In 1984 Belgian artist Jean Vérame painted a cluster of granite boulders outside town in blue, pink and ochre. Now faded by the sun, the surreal field of coloured rocks remains Tafraoute's most photographed sight.

02Nature

The Ammeln Valley

A string of pink-and-white villages clings to the slopes beneath Jebel el-Kest, surrounded by almond and argan groves. The valley is a scenic drive and a fine base for walks between the traditional Berber hamlets.

03Viewpoint

Le Chapeau de Napoléon

A granite outcrop near the village of Aguerd Oudad, shaped like a tricorn hat, gives the formation its nickname. It is an easy, classic short hike and a favourite spot to watch the light change on the rocks.

04Nature

Almond Blossom Season

In February the valleys around Tafraoute fill with almond blossom, celebrated each year by a local festival. The white-and-pink bloom against the red granite is one of the Anti-Atlas's signature seasonal sights.

05Crafts

Babouche & Slipper Workshops

Tafraoute has a long tradition of making leather babouches, and many of the slippers sold across the south originate here. Small workshops in town let you watch the cutting and stitching of the colourful footwear.

06Nature

Rock Climbing & Bouldering

The clean granite of Jebel el-Kest and the surrounding cliffs has made the region a growing destination for climbers and boulderers, with hundreds of routes and quartzite faces explored in recent decades.

07Viewpoint

Sunset Over the Granite

As the sun drops, the bare granite domes around Tafraoute glow deep rose and orange. Viewpoints on the edge of town and along the Ammeln road are ideal places to catch the celebrated evening colours.

08Culture

Prehistoric Rock Carvings

Sites in the hills around Tafraoute, such as those near Tazka, preserve ancient petroglyphs of gazelles and other animals carved into the rock, hinting at the region's long human history.

09Food

Local Souk Day

Tafraoute's weekly market draws farmers and herders from the surrounding valleys, with stalls of dates, almonds, argan oil, spices and crafts. It offers an unhurried taste of everyday Anti-Atlas life.

10Day trip

Aït Mansour Gorges

South of town, the road threads through the Aït Mansour gorges into a lush palm oasis hemmed by towering rock walls. The drive past mudbrick villages and date palms is among the area's most scenic excursions.

11Crafts

Argan & Almond Co-operatives

The region's argan and almond harvests feed local co-operatives that press oil and produce amlou, the rich almond-and-argan spread. Visits show the traditional process and the products that define Souss cuisine.

12Day trip

Scenic Drive from Agadir

The route up from Agadir via Aït Baha or Tiznit climbs steadily into the Anti-Atlas through argan forest and Berber villages. The mountain road itself, with its passes and viewpoints, is half the reward of reaching Tafraoute.
