Why Tangier
Tangier holds down Morocco's northern tip, the point where the Atlantic spills into the Mediterranean and Spain shows on the horizon across the strait on a clear day — about as far, on the diagonal, as you can get from the Agadir coast. For decades an international free city run jointly by foreign powers from 1923 to 1956, it pulled in Matisse, Paul Bowles, William Burroughs and the Rolling Stones. Now it's the polished doorway to the north: a 35-minute ferry from Tarifa, two hours from Chefchaouen and two hours from Fes on the high-speed line. For our coastal guests it anchors a northern grand tour of its own, not a quick hop from the beach.
What to see
Climb up from the Petit Socco to the Dar el-Makhzen kasbah museum, where the terraces open over the harbour with Spain laid out across the water.
The north-western tip of Africa, marked by a lighthouse, beside the wave-cut sea cave whose mouth is famously shaped like a map of the continent.
Trace the city's writers: Hotel El Muniria where Burroughs drafted Naked Lunch, Café Hafa where Bowles drank his mint tea, and the Librairie des Colonnes.
A skippered sail out across the bay, a swim stop off Cap Spartel and lunch on deck — a saltwater day to rival anything back on the Agadir bay.

Yes — especially if you're crossing in from Spain or stitching together a northern loop of Tangier, Chefchaouen and Fes. It's the most cosmopolitan of Morocco's old cities. Just remember it sits in the corner furthest from Agadir, so it earns its place on a wider tour rather than a coastal week.
Two nights is about right — a day for the kasbah and medina, then a day out at Cap Spartel rounded off with a long, unhurried lunch.
