Why Dakhla

Dakhla sits on a peninsula on Morocco's far-southern Atlantic coast, roughly 1,700 km south of Casablanca and 550 km south of Agadir, reaching out into a 40 km lagoon held back from the open ocean by a thin tongue of sand. That flat, waist-deep water and the steady north-easterly trade winds — the alizé — have turned Dakhla into one of the world's great kitesurfing and windsurfing spots, drawing riders from Europe, the Americas and beyond from November to April. Step away from the water and the setting is just as striking: pink flamingos working the shallows, hammada running flat to the horizon on every side, and fish landed each morning for the simple port restaurants that rank among the best on the whole Moroccan coast. From Agadir it's the deep south's wildcard — a long way down, and worth it.

What to see

Highlights of Dakhla.

01

What makes Dakhla's lagoon ideal for kitesurfing?

The lagoon serves up flat, shin-to-waist-deep water over a sandy bottom, with the steady north-easterly alizé blowing 20–35 knots most mornings — conditions that let beginners come on fast and let advanced riders drill freestyle and foiling without any ocean swell to fight.

02

Flamingo spotting on the lagoon edge

Greater flamingos (Phoenicopterus roseus) feed the southern shallows year-round, peaking in winter. A short 4x4 run south of town reaches the flats at Imlili, where you can watch hundreds of birds up close.

03

Fresh Atlantic seafood at the port

The Dakhla fleet lands sea bream, grouper, octopus and sea bass every morning. The plain port restaurants grill it to order, and the catch-of-the-day set menu is one of the best-value meals you'll eat in Morocco.

04

Sand-dune day trips and desert sunsets

East of the lagoon the hammada breaks into crescent dunes you reach by 4x4; the vast empty landscape at sunset, with the lagoon glowing below, is the image you carry home from a Dakhla stay.

  • Kitesurf season: November–April for dependable 20–35-knot trade winds; May–October turns lighter and more variable — better for SUP and kayaking
  • Currency and connectivity: Moroccan dirham (MAD); mobile 4G coverage in town; most kite centres and hotels have Wi-Fi
  • Visas: Morocco's standard visa rules apply — visa-free for EU, UK, US, CA and AU nationals up to 90 days

FAQ

Dakhla — common questions.

Is Dakhla suitable for beginner kitesurfers?+

Very — the flat lagoon, sandy bottom and steady-but-not-savage trade winds make it one of the best places anywhere to learn. Most IKO-certified schools on the lagoon run 9–12 hour beginner courses, and students usually reach independent riding inside a week.

What is the best time of year to visit Dakhla?+

November through April brings the most reliable wind (20–35 knots most days) and comfortable air of 20–26°C. May to October is quieter and lighter on wind — the season for travellers chasing empty beaches and solitude over sport.

Is Dakhla safe and politically stable?+

Yes — Dakhla is under Moroccan administration and one of the safest towns in the country. Security is visible, the past decade has brought heavy investment in infrastructure, and several thousand European visitors pass through every year without trouble.

How far is Dakhla from Marrakech?+

About 1,700 km by road — a two-day drive. The sensible way is to fly Casablanca to Dakhla (2h30), or build it in at the start or end of a wider Morocco trip using the Royal Air Maroc domestic network.
