Why the south works for a honeymoon

Starting on the coast gives a honeymoon a gentle, indulgent rhythm before the adventure. From an Agadir base you can have long mornings on the beach and at the spa, sunset drinks above the marina, and a private day exploring the palm pools of Paradise Valley — then strike out for a night in the desert or a few days in Marrakech and Essaouira. The mild Atlantic climate means the beach half of the trip works almost any month, even when the interior is too hot or too cold.

The sweet spot is a private trip with a driver — your own schedule, no group dynamics, the freedom to linger over a candlelit dinner or a clifftop sunset at Taghazout. Many coastal hotels and inland riads treat honeymoon couples with particular warmth and add thoughtful touches — rose petals, pastries, a private terrace dinner — when told in advance.

The most romantic bases

On the coast, Agadir's seafront spa hotels and the boutique guesthouses tucked into the hills above Taghazout offer pools, ocean views and couples' hammams a few steps from the beach. For a quieter, more characterful night, the walled town of Taroudant inland — sometimes called 'little Marrakech' — has romantic riad-style palace hotels among its ramparts and orange groves.

Inland, Marrakech still holds the greatest concentration of genuinely luxurious riads — plunge-pool suites, rooftop terraces with Atlas views and in-house hammams — an easy add-on from the south. The Atlantic coast also offers Essaouira, wind-blown, bohemian and brilliant for seafood, a perfect romantic stop on the drive up from Agadir.

Desert luxury camps

A night at a luxury desert camp — at the dunes of Zagora, the most accessible from the south, or the grander Erg Chebbi near Merzouga — is consistently cited as the most memorable experience of a Morocco honeymoon. The best camps offer permanent ensuite tents with proper beds, private fire pits, candle-lit dinners under the stars and private sunrise camel rides before the tour groups arrive. A small number of camps strike the right balance of isolation, service and genuine luxury — choose one matched to how far you want to travel and the comfort level you're after.

  • Zagora: the most accessible dunes from the south — feasible as part of a loop out of Marrakech or Agadir; comfortable luxury camps.
  • Erg Chebbi (Merzouga): the grandest dunes — further (8–9 hours from Marrakech) but the closest camp to a luxury-hotel standard of comfort.
  • Either way: book an ensuite tent or a private dome; the gap between budget and luxury camps is significant.

A suggested 7–10 day romantic route

For 7 days: two or three nights on the Agadir coast (beach, spa, a Paradise Valley day and a Taghazout sunset); up to Essaouira for a night of ramparts and seafood; then two nights in Marrakech for the souks, a couples' hammam and a rooftop dinner. For 10 days: add a desert night at Zagora's dunes before returning to the coast for a final barefoot morning.

  • Agadir coast (2–3 nights): seafront spa hotel; beach and pool days; Paradise Valley; sunset at Taghazout.
  • Essaouira (1 night): blue-white ramparts, fresh grilled seafood, a slower bohemian pace.
  • Marrakech (2 nights): luxury riad with plunge pool; private medina tour; hammam for two; rooftop dinner.
  • Sahara at Zagora (1 night, optional): arrive for the dune sunset, private camp dinner, sunrise camel ride.
  • Taroudant (1 night, optional): ramparts and orange groves, an atmospheric palace-hotel on the way back to the coast.

Frequently asked

When is the best time for a honeymoon in southern Morocco?

Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are the ideal windows: comfortable inland weather, warm coast and the dunes at their most photogenic. The Agadir beach portion works almost year-round thanks to the mild Atlantic climate, while the desert is best avoided in the July–August heat.

What makes a romantic place to stay on the Agadir coast?

The properties that consistently deliver for honeymoon couples share certain traits: a sea view or a private plunge pool, a couples' hammam or spa, an intimate scale rather than a sprawling resort, and an easy walk to the beach or marina. The boutique guesthouses in the hills above Taghazout are a quieter, more characterful alternative to the big seafront hotels.

Is a southern Morocco honeymoon expensive?

A private coast-and-Marrakech honeymoon (boutique seafront stay, a luxury riad, private driver and a desert night) realistically runs from around US$280–550 per couple per day in-country. A 7-day trip for two lands roughly between US$2,200 and US$4,500 excluding international flights, depending on the standard chosen.

Do hotels offer honeymoon touches?

Most will add romantic extras — rose petals, a bottle of Moroccan wine, a private terrace or beach dinner — when told in advance. Few have formal packages; it's more organic than that. Let your hotel or riad know the occasion before arrival.

Is Morocco suitable for LGBTQ+ honeymooners?

Same-sex relationships are criminalised under Moroccan law, and public displays of affection between same-sex couples can attract unwanted attention or legal risk. Morocco is not currently a recommended destination for LGBTQ+ couples seeking an open, celebratory honeymoon — the experience in the medinas and smaller towns would require significant discretion.
